Living in Miami you get used to the fact that most restaurants serve some style of Cuban food, and no matter how hard they try the non-authentic places usually don’t get it quite right. However, Ankarr was one of the few exceptions. Don’t let the name fool you, it’s more than a pastry shop!

It’s my own fault for not knowing Spanish, which is what the single menu on the side-wall is printed in, but the staff are more than happy to assist in menu translations. The menu isn’t exactly exploding with choices but every time I’ve eaten there the food has been fantastic. The food selection consists of mostly egg dishes (breakfast), sandwiches, and a few prepared foods like chicken cordon blue.

They have a varying of pastries, some I recognized being authentically Cuban, others I could not identify, yet they all looked absolutely delicious!

As far as atmosphere goes, the building itself is two floor, the restaurant being on the 1st floor. I’m not even sure if the 2nd floor is used. There are perhaps 8 or 9 tables, seating perhaps 2 people at most. Not somewhere you would want to take a large group or children but they were very quick to ask while ordering if the meal was ‘to-go’, so I would assume they get a lot of business that way.

The items on the menu were of varying price, but nothing was too expensive. I would say that this place would definitely NOT destroy your wallet, but when you see the desserts you might end up breaking the bank just because of how many you buy, not the individual price. :)

My waitresses have always been extremely polite and happy to chit-chat about the food or anything else while you’re ordering. I think even the manager came over to my table once to check on my meal, which is assuring if it’s true.

Since taking my girlfriend, she’s started taking her friends, who in turn have taken theirs, so it can’t be all bad.
